Dr Popplewell is an academic vascular surgeon with an interest in clinical research. His clinical interests are in limb salvage for patients with CLTI using both open and endovascular approaches.

Dr Popplewell is a clinical academic working at the University of Birmingham and is currently working on trials related to surgical site infection following vascular surgery. Matt has worked as a fellow and then collaborator and is now the chief investigator of both the BASIL-2 and BASIL-3 trials. He has published extensively relating to CLTI, surgical site infection and venous disease. Dr Popplewell has recently gained funding from the NIHR HTA for a large RCT designed to investigate adjuncts to prevent SSI in the groin following vascular surgery.

He is currently also an honorary consultant surgeon at The Black Country Vascular Network in The West Midlands, UK.
