Stefan Holubar was born & raised on Long Island NY. Under the mentorship of Neil Hyman MD, he received an MD from Univ. of Vermont in 2002 after overcoming colitis associated colon cancer. Stefan then completed General Surgery Residency at North Shore-LIJ in 2007, and then completed a 2-year Masters in Clinical/Translational Research, & a clinical Colorectal Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester, 2007 – 2010. He then joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 2010, and in 2015 was appointed Colon & Rectal Surgery Division Chief. Given his long-standing interest in Surgery for IBD, in Aug. 2017 Dr. Holubar accepted a position at Cleveland Clinic where he serves as the IBD Surgery Section Chief, and the Director of Research, for the Dept. of Colorectal Surgery. On a national level, Dr. Holubar is actively engaged in helping to lead the NSQIP IBD Collaborative, serves as Vice-Chair for the ASCRS IBD Committee, and was the Co-Chair of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Prof Ed Committee. To date he has published >180 peer-reviewed articles (>50% on IBD), a dozen book chapters, & 1 book (coeditor). His clinical and research focus is IBD, with a special interest in all any Med-Surg pouch (IPAA) topics/issues, complex Crohn’s & Colitis, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in IBD and recently received a grant from the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation to examine the role of aspirin in VTE prophylaxis. Finally, Dr. Holubar is the PI for the newly funded Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s surgical cohort, IBD-SIRCQ (Surgical Innovation, Research, & Quality Collaborative). His current interests include the use of artificial intelligence including natural language processing, machine learning, and deep learning to help leverage Big Data to improve IBD care now.
