Dr. Cara Poland, a renowned expert in addiction medicine and a faculty member at Michigan State University, holds a medical degree from Wayne State University. She completed her internal medicine training at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and addiction medicine training at Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts. She obtained her master's degree in education from Boston University. Dr. Poland is dedicated to educating healthcare providers and trainees, focusing on improving care for patients with substance use disorders, particularly during pregnancy and early parenting.
In 2018, board-certified Addiction Medicine Doctor Cara Poland identified the need to strengthen our country's Addiction Medicine workforce. Using State Opioid Response funds and collaborating with Michigan's seven medical schools, she founded MI CARES. Under Dr. Poland's leadership, MI CARES not only trains physician-level addiction specialists in Michigan but across the country. Over 1,000 physicians in all 50 states are on the pathway to board certification in Addiction Medicine. The program also educates physicians-in-training, resident physicians, social work students, and practitioners.
Dr. Poland leads the special interest grant which focuses on treating pregnant individuals and their families living with substance use disorders. Her nationally recognized program materials are available for other treatment programs, and she provides technical assistance to implement addiction care in the perinatal population.
