Dr. Gibbons graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Maine (3yrs) in 1967 and received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in 1971. Surgical residency was completed on the Harvard Surgical Service, Boston City/New England Deaconess Hospital 1976.
Dr. Gibbons joined Deaconess Hospital/Joslin Clinic practicing Vascular Surgery. His career focused on advancing treatment of diabetic patients with ischemic lower extremity wounds. He was one of the pioneers of the Dorsalis Pedis Bypass and developing many of the currently used multidisciplinary algorithms for limb salvage.
In 1996, he received the ADA’s Roger Pecoraro Award for his contributions to limb preservation in diabetics.
In 1999, Dr. Gibbons joined Boston Medical Center as Executive Director Foot Care Specialists of BMC and became Professor of Surgery, BU School of Medicine. In 2000 the program expanded to Quincy Medical Center, appointing him President/CEO in 2005.
In 2006, he was honored with the prestigious Edward James Olmos Award for Advocacy in Amputation Prevention. He was the recipient of the 2010 Georgetown Distinguished Achievement Award in diabetic limb salvage.
South Shore Hospital recruited him to become Medical Director of its struggling Wound Center 2009. It is now recognized as the regions “Center of Excellence” averaging 100 patients per day. Its hallmark is the distinguished multidisciplinary Lower Limb Preservation Program
