Aleksandra Zgierska is a family and addiction medicine physician and Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, and Public Health Sciences at Penn State College of Medicine. She serves as Vice Chair of Research at the Penn State Department of Family and Community Medicine, Co-Lead of the Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s Community-Engaged Research Core, and Associate Director of the Penn State Addiction Center for Translation Pain Studies Core, and the T32 Primary Care Research Fellowship. She is also the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)’s Vice President and Board of Directors member.
She completed a family medicine residency and then served as a faculty at the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has focused her career on advancing practice, research, education and advocacy in addiction medicine, especially within primary care settings and when it intersects with pain. Dr. Zgierska’s work also aims to increase access to evidence-based care, and reduce the negative impact of stigma and bias among people affected by addiction, including in criminal justice settings. She lives in Hershey, PA, loves to read, hike, bike, cook, garden, and spend time with family and friends.
