Peter has over 30 years’ experience in the substance use disorder treatment and recovery field. He joined the Office of National Drug Control Policy in 2010 as the Chief of the Recovery Branch, helping frame and implement the federal government’s initial policy framework for supporting recovery. He currently provides expertise on a wide range of public health policy and regulatory issues with a recovery nexus., including the development and implementation of the National Drug Control Strategy. Peter led the development of the Recovery-Ready Workplace Resource Hub and the Recovery-Ready Workplace Toolkit and supported the development of the Recovery-Ready Workplaces Model State Act.
Prior to joining ONDCP, Peter served as a senior associate at Altarum Institute and at Abt Associates Inc., providing technical assistance to states and tribes and the federal government. Earlier, he served as the Administrator of Program Development for the Illinois Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, as an analyst at the Illinois Office of Management and Budget, in diverse other roles in the addictions field, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa.
As a person in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol, Peter works to raise awareness of addiction and recovery and to reduce the stigma and misunderstanding that contribute to social exclusion.
Peter holds master’s degree from the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice at the University of Chicago and currently serves as the President of the school’s Alumni Association Board. He has a BA from Marquette University.
