Alice Asher, RN, PhD, is a senior health scientist and lead of the Harm Reduction Unit in the Prevention Programs and Evaluation Branch in the Division of Overdose Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Prevention. Dr. Asher is a subject matter expert in harm reduction. She coordinates harm reduction activities across the Division and leads the Harm Reduction Centers of Excellence, a hub and spoke model providoing support to community-based harm reduction programs and their integration into the overdose prevention public health infrastructure. Before joining CDC in 2016, she served as the project director for research studies with people who inject drugs, most recently, a clinical trial testing a hepatitis C vaccine, and was a volunteer nurse at the San Francisco Needle Exchange for eight years. Dr. Asher received her bachelor’s degree in anthropology and women’s studies from Grinnell College, and her advanced nursing licensure, Masters and PhD in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco.
