Adrianne P.S. Smith, MD, has devoted decades to redefining wound care and regenerative medicine. A leader in her field, she has consistently advanced patient care, shaped industry standards by assisting in creating guidance documents, and encouraged innovation as a senior member of early-stage companies working with collagens, amniotic tissues, platelet-rich plasma, pulsed electromagnetic field energy (PEMF) for pain management, and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Rooted in academic excellence and military discipline, Smith’s journey exemplifies commitment and leadership in healthcare helping to guide advances in wound care, wound-related pain management, and equity in care. Dr. Smith’s medical journey began at Duke University, where she earned a BA in chemistry with a specialization in biochemistry. She continued her education at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis MO, obtaining her medical degree in 1985. From there, she completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Wilford Hall Medical Center through the U.S. Air Force and a Fellowship Certification in hyperbaric medicine and wound care with the USAF under a memorandum of understanding with the UTHEALTH- San Antonio. While at UTHealth she founded the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Program at the Texas Diabetes Institute. She led a team in the early stage implementation and growth of the San Antonio-based NuHope Program- Pre-op and Post-op program designed to reduce pain-related surgical complications in patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) using a variety of interventions strategies, including pharmacologic and non-pharmaceutical interventions and therapies.
