Somprakas Basu, MBBS, MS (Surgery), MSc (Cardiff), FRCS (Glasg), FACS, FAIS, FACRSI is Professor and Chair of the Department of General Surgery and is the Chairman of Surgical Skills Center and the International Collaboration Committee at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh, India. He also serves as the Chair of the Technical Committee at the United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub, Member of the Specialist Board in Colorectal Surgery of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences India, Member of the Guidelines Development Committee on Stem Cells in Chronic Wounds at the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of Govt. of India, and Member of International Advisory Board of WoundCon at HMP Global.

He grew up in India and received his schooling from St. Joseph’s College at Calcutta, undergraduate medical degree from Calcutta University, postgraduate medical degree in Surgery from Delhi University, and master’s degree in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair from the Cardiff University Medical School, Wales, UK.  He completed his surgical residency at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, and North Bengal Medical College Darjeeling.

Dr. Basu is a recognized leader in the field of Wound Healing and has served as the President of the Indian Society of Wound Management from 2018-2023. As a leader in wound healing research in India, he has been an invited speaker at conferences at home and abroad. His research interests are in wound biofilm and growth factors. Dr. Basu has received numerous awards from various professional bodies including the prestigious International Guest Scholarship of the American College of Surgeons and the Robert E Warriner III Memorial Award of the Association of Advancement in Wound Care. 

Dr. Basu has served as the peer reviewer/editorial board member of multiple journals in the field of Surgery and Wound Healing. He has authored or co-authored more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific papers, invited manuscripts, and book chapters. Dr. Basu is also a member/Fellow of various professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Association of Advancement in Wound Care, Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, Association of Surgeons of India, Indian Medical Association, and Association of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of India.

He lives with his wife, who is a professor in Neonatology, and one son who is a budding Dermatologist. He loves traveling, reading ancient history, and drawing and painting in his leisure time.
