Each year, Psych Congress Elevate offers a limited number of complimentary scholarships to students, residents, or fellows in mental healthcare eager to take on new challenges in diagnosis and treatment, and be at the forefront of their field. We're thrilled to feature some of our past scholars and hear about their success stories!
Past Scholar, Nurse Practitioner, DNP, APRN, MHS, PMHNP-BC
Q: How did attending Psych Congress Elevate and being an Elevate Scholar help you in launching your career?
A: Overall, attending as an Elevate Scholar aided me to positively growing professionally and personally. The variety of learning and engaging opportunities available as an Elevate Scholar allowed me to elevate myself as a clinician and to be part of the Psych Congress community. As an Elevate Scholar, it not only positively transformed me to be a better clinician but also elevated myself to provide care that will enhance the overall well-being of patients. As an Elevate Scholar, I hope to share my unique skills, knowledge, or experiences to support the Psych Congress in improving mental health by being a committee member, speaker, moderator, or attendee.
Q: Where are you now in your career? Are there any achievements, accomplishments, or challenges faced you'd like to highlight?
A: After attending this conference, I have been able to work as a PMHNP-BC at an outpatient community mental health center. I’ve been able to use the knowledge and skills from the 2023 Psych Congress Elevate conference to provide patients with the most up-to-date mental health treatments. A major accomplishment is presenting my DNP project at the 2023 Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU) conference. As a recent PMHNP-BC, I encounter challenges in finding psychiatric treatments that will work for those with complex medical conditions, especially individuals with substance use disorder, kidney failure, or other chronic illnesses. Despite these challenges, it’s rewarding to support individuals to better their mental health.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is beginning their career in mental healthcare looking to attend Elevate for the first time?
A: I would highly advise prospective mental health individuals to attend Elevate because of all the enriching and transforming experiences. These unique opportunities and experiences at Elevate can be beneficial for their professional and personal lives.
Past Scholar, Advanced Practice Nurse, Registered Dietitian, PMHNP
Q: How did attending Psych Congress Elevate and being an Elevate Scholar help you in launching your career?
A: Attending the Psych Congress Elevate helped me tremendously in my confidence in applying for jobs and fellowships. It was incredible to network with other emerging leaders in the field, share resources, and ideas and build friendships. I attended the Psych Congress Elevate conference after I had completed all of my clinical hours required to sit for my PMHNP exam. The conference really broke down a lot of the concepts I had learned in school but made the information more applicable and clinically relevant.
Q: Where are you now in your career? Are there any achievements, accomplishments, or challenges faced you'd like to highlight?
A: I am one of the few African-American Registered Dietitians and PMHNPs in the country who specialize in eating disorders. Education and peer mentorship is something that I not only value but has also helped me tremendously in my career. Very few providers can address the complexities of working with clients who have eating disorders. I was able to combine my love for education and relationship building and created an eating disorder conference. This past year we were able to train over 300 professionals and advocates on eating disorders with respect to trauma and cultural inclusivity.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is beginning their career in mental healthcare looking to attend Elevate for the first time?
A: Network, network, network. I left the Elevate conference so inspired and encouraged. I truly believe every new clinician needs to attend the Elevate conference at least once in their career.
