Rob Ravndal is a paramedic program director and instructor at Southeast Community College. Before becoming an educator, he spent 17 years working as a paramedic and firefighter/paramedic in urban, suburban, and rural EMS systems. In 2015 Rob responded to a critical incident and developed PTSD, which forced his retirement from the field. As part of his treatment, he uses a service dog and began to see the world through a different lens. He was confronted with the reality that had he encountered a patient with a service animal he had never been educated on how to ethically and legally navigate the call. In 2024 Rob graduated with a master’s degree in history. This foundation of knowledge and experience provides a unique perspective regarding EMS personnel’s response to service dog handlers.
