Laura Shin, DPM, PhD, is a reconstructive surgeon and physician-scientist who specializes in podiatry, including foot and ankle deformities, Charcot neuroarthropathy, limb salvage, wound care and diabetic feet and ankles. She holds the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Vascular Surgery and Program Director of Education of the Limb Salvage Fellowship. She completed a dual Doctor of Podiatric Medical Degree (DPM) and PhD degree with a research focus on the endogenous stem cell niche and deficiencies in healing in diabetic and aging populations. She was the first DPM/PhD candidate to be awarded the prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA)’s Clinician Scientist Training grant for her work with bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells in non-healing wounds and she was awarded the inaugural Young Investigator Award by the Journal of Stem Cells Translational Medicine. Her clinical interests are in reconstruction and amputatinon prevention. She currently has NIH funding for evaluating markers for early detection of Charcot Neuroarthropathy. Away from her work she loves spending time with her family, playing tennis and exploring the outdoors.
