Ernest Chiu is a board certified plastic surgeon who received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York. He completed a combined General Surgery residency at New York University Medical Center and Plastic Surgery residency at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in New York. In addition, he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Skirball Biomolecular Institute and Microsurgery/Breast reconstruction fellowship at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center also in Manhattan.
In 2004, Dr. Chiu began his academic plastic surgery career as an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center and Chief of Plastic Surgery Service at University Hospital in New Orleans. He was a Co-Founder of the Children's Hospital of New Orleans Vascular Anomalies Center. After Hurricane Katrina, he chose to remain in New Orleans to help its citizens and the medical system recover by joining the Tulane University Health Sciences Center as the Harold G. Tabb Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery & Otolaryngology and Director of Research. Later, he was appointed the William Henderson Chair in Surgery at the School of Medicine.
Since 2012, Dr. Chiu is the NYU Langone Health Medical Director of the Helen L. & Martin S. Kimmel Hyperbaric and Advanced Wound Healing Center. His interests include wound repair, scar therapy, local/regional flap surgery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, adipose stem cell research, tissue engineering, and aesthetic surgery. In addition to an active clinical practice, Dr. Chiu has published extensively in the plastic surgery literature, received numerous research grants/awards, lectured worldwide, and been elected as a member of the ABPS Oral Board Examination Committee, Advances in Wound Care Editorial Board, National Suppurativa Hidradenitis Society Board Member, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Research Council, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. Since 2014, Dr Chiu has been continually honored by his medical peers in Castle Connolly and New York Magazine’s “Top Doctors” series for his plastic surgery expertise. He is Professor of Plastic Surgery and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs in the Hansjorg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery.
