Dr. Lindsay Kalan is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the School of Medicine and Public Health. She obtained her PhD in Biochemistry from McMaster University where she the studied evolution of antibiotic resistance in the environment and clinic. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania where she developed methods to employ whole genome shotgun (WGS) metagenomic sequencing and analysis to decipher the functional and pathogenic potential of microbial communities in diabetic foot ulcers. Dr. Kalan’s current research is aimed at investigating the ecology of the skin and interactions with microbes that maintain a health or promote pathogenesis in the context of wound healing. This is accomplished using a highly inter-disciplinary approach, spanning the fields of genomics, microbiology, chemistry, and computation biology. Combined, her work has led to publications in high-end peer reviewed journals such as Nature, mBio, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Chemistry and Biology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS), and Advances in Wound Care.
