Susan W. Volk, VMD, PhD is an the Corinne R and Henry Bower Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. As a clinician-scientist, she has had a long-standing clinical interest in wound healing, with a complimentary basic research program focused on the role of the extracellular matrix in modulating progenitor and reparative cell activities during tissue repair and evaluating the utility of adult stem cells to promote regenerative responses. Recent work from her laboratory has defined cell-matrix interactions that regulate the wound healing-fibrosis-cancer triad. This NIH, private foundation, and industry-sponsored research has basic and translational components, including clinical trials in veterinary patients. Dr. Volk serves as Vice President of the Wound Healing Society and as a member of the Board of Directors of the North American Veterinary Regenerative Medical Association.
