Professor Daniel J. Cohen is an Associate Professor with Tenure at Princeton University. He is jointly appointed to the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Omenn-Darling Bioengineering Institute where he is the inaugural Director of Graduate Studies. His undergraduate training at Princeton was in mechanical engineering and materials science, and he holds joint Ph.Ds. in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley and UCSF. He was a Life Sciences Research Foundation Fellow at Stanford University before moving to Princeton University.
Prof. Cohen’s research broadly relates to understanding and controlling the crowd dynamics of cells in living tissues, with a special emphasis on the swarm behaviors of tissue healing and regeneration. He is a specialist in engineering bioelectric tools to accelerate healing and program cell migration, as well as in the development of cell-mimetic biomaterials to integrate with soft tissues. Accolades for his work include the NSF CAREER Award, NIH MIRA Outstanding Investigator Award, and the Biomedical Engineering Society Rising Star Award.
Outside of the lab, Prof. Cohen is a professional storyteller, co-producing Odd Salon: New York and running the week-long LabTales science storytelling workshop as well as LabTales_mini at universities and conferences. LabTales challenges and trains researchers and clinicians to find, learn, share, and get inspired by the human stories from the deep histories of their fields. He has given over 75 such storytelling workshops and is committed to improving the understanding, appreciation, and communication of the history of science and medicine.
