Dr. Diegelmann received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University and then spent three years as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute at the N.I.H. in Bethesda MD. In 1972 he moved to VCU, established the Laboratory of Tissue Repair, and is in his 46th year as the Director of the lab. Currently he is a Professor of Biochemistry & Emergency Medicine at the V C U Medical Center. Dr. Diegelmann co-edited the textbook entitled “Wound Healing: Biochemical and Clinical Aspects”, has published over 200 scientific manuscripts and book chapters on wound healing and has given numerous lectures on the topic at both national and international meetings. Over the years his research has been funded by the N.I.H. and the Department of Defense as well as by industry. Recently he edited a text entitled “Basic Biology and Clinical Aspects of Inflammation.” In 1989 he was one of the Founding Members of The Wound Healing Society and served as the society’s President in 2013. In 2005 he discovered Wound Stat®, a novel technology to control life-threating arterial bleeds and received the US Army’s “Combat Casualty Care Research Award for Excellence.” In 2016, the Wound Healing Society recognized Dr. Diegelmann with a Lifetime Achievement Award and this year he was elected into the National Academy of Inventors. In 2018 he was recognized as the Innovator of the Year by Virginia Commonwealth University for his discovery of life saving technologies to control arterial bleeding.
