University of Minho

Alexandra P. Marques is a Coordinating Investigator and co-founder of the 3B’s Research Group (deputy director from 2016 to 2018), a research unit of the I3Bs - Research Institute on Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics (Vice-President from 2018 to 2022), at the University of Minho in Portugal. She holds a Habilitation in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells, with a specialization in Stem cells (2020), a PhD on Materials Science and Technology – Biomaterials (2004) and a BSc in Biochemistry (1997).
Her research focuses on developing advanced in vitro models to deepen the understanding of mechanisms underlying skin conditions and diseases. By integrating stem cells and biomaterials, she has been devising innovative strategies for skin wound healing, with recent efforts centered on studying the extracellular matrix in wound repair and skin diseases.
Dr Marques is an active member of several international scientific organizations, including the European Wound Management Association (EWMA), the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS), the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB) and the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cellular Therapy (SPCE-TC). At EWMA, she has served as honorary secretary, a member of the executive and scientific committees, and presently chairs the Translational Research Committee.
She contributes to numerous scientific journals as an editorial board member, Guest/Topic Editor, and reviewer for leading publications in her field. She is Associate Editor of the Skin Physiology Section in Frontiers in Physiology, and was Associate Editor and Assistant Editor of the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.
